Native Edible Trees Project
With a grant from Arizona State Forestry, Watershed Management Group is working on a Native Edible Tree project through the end of 2024 exploring the use of native edible trees and plants in our region through education and events on urban foraging, cultivating, harvesting, and processing these foods. From learning how to identify and use native edibles at home and in our neighborhoods, using them to create our own food forests, cultivating more native edible trees to cool, shade, and beautify our streets - this is a compelling project we are excited to share!

Wi:Hog (Mesquite) Workshops

Partnering on this project, San Xavier Co-op Farm will be contributing cultural and historical perspectives on native foods of the Sonoran Desert offering two workshops on harvesting and milling wi:hog (mesquite). Please note that these workshops are at the San Xavier Co-op Farm about a 30-minute drive from mid-town Tucson and may be postponed due to weather or if the trees are not ready to be harvested.
With funding throught the Native Edible Tree project, WMG is able to provide scholarships for 5 people to attend each of these one-day workshops. We will prioritize those who will be able to use this knowledge in their school, neighborhood, or work place and/or are from traditionally under-resourced or low tree canopy areas. We will look at organizing car pools. Please submit your interest here.
