The Julian Wash runs through Barrio Kroeger Lane, connecting to the Santa Cruz River just West of the I-10 highway.
As our creeks, rivers, and washes fill up with water during our rainy seasons, trash follows and accumulates with the flow, and invasive species start outcompeting the native vegetation.
In May, Favor Celestial, a community of neighbors from Barrio Kroeger Lane and surrounding neighborhoods, and WMG organized a cleanup event on a portion of the Julian Wash on the southern end of Barrio Kroeger Lane. This area is covered with beautiful native plants, an important wildlife corridor, and an envisioned community gathering space. As a tributary to the Santa Cruz, it is important to keep trash and invasive species out of the creek!
Historically, Barrio Kroeger Lane has largely been a suburban and semi-rural neighborhood. Throughout its development, the barrio has continued to retain its heritage expressed in its built environment, and many of its formative cultural practices remain active and vital to the present day. This history is reflective of its diverse inhabitants, which have traditionally been dominated by “Tucsonenses”—a self-identifying term utilized by Tucson’s long-standing Mexican American community.
Thanks to Mr. Patel, owner of the Motel 6 and the lot adjacent to this section of the Julian Wash for working with us to access the site. Thank you also to all that were there to help remove trash and invasive species, and help care for this cherished natural feature in the Barrio Kroeger Lane neighborhood.

Vecindario Destacado: Limpieza del Arroyo Julian en Barrio Kroeger Lane en Mayo del 2022.
El Arroyo Julian pasa a través del Barrio Kroeger Lane, conectando con el Río Santa Cruz justo al oeste de la autopista I-10. Nuestros riachuelos, ríos, y arroyos se llenan de agua durante nuestras temporadas lluviosas, y luego viene la basura que se acumula con el flujo del agua, posteriormente, especies invasoras empiezan a desplazar a nuestra vegetación nativa.
En Mayo, Favor Celestial, vecinos del Barrio Kroeger Lane y comunidades de los alrededores, y WMG organizaron un evento de limpieza en una porción del Arroyo Julian en la parte sur del Barrio Kroeger Lane; un área que está cubierta con hermosas plantas nativas y sirve como un importante corredor para la vida silvestre, además de que se planea su uso como un espacio para la comunidad en el futuro. Siendo un tributario del Santa Cruz, ¡es importante mantener la basura y las especies invasoras fuera del arroyo!
Históricamente, el Barrio Kroeger Lane ha sido mayoritariamente un vecindario suburbano y semi-rural. A lo largo de su desarrollo, el barrio ha seguido conservando su herencia expresada en su entorno construido, y muchas de sus prácticas culturales formativas permanecen activas y vitales hasta el día de hoy. Esta historia es un reflejo de sus diversos habitantes, que tradicionalmente han estado dominados por los "tucsonenses", un término de autoidentificación utilizado por la comunidad mexicoamericana de Tucson.
