CoderDojo Workshops at the Living Lab - ages 7-17

Coder Dojo will be offering free week-long coding/gaming workshops at the Living Lab - drawing on WMG's work in water-awareness and 'hydrolocal' practices.

Through fun activities – such as exploring the rain gardens, food forest, and other water conservation practices, telling stories, making games, and collecting data - participants will consider what each can do to make the most of the water we have here in Tucson.

Who will be teaching the CoderDojo workshops?

Dan Stormont is a docent with Watershed Management Group and a certified water harvesting practitioner. He worked with Microsoft TEALS Program for five years, helping to build equitable and inclusive computer science education programs in high schools and, prior to that, he was a program instructor with the Pima County Public Library where he founded CoderDojo Tucson  - a local dojo of the CoderDojo Foundation, a registered charitable organization based in Dublin, Ireland.

Dan has advanced degrees in computing engineering and is passionate about applying computing to sustainability. This summer's workshop seried is focuced on using computing to understand and communicate the concept of 'hydrolocal' - thriving with the water resources available where we live.

    Workshop Themes

    • Week of July 10th: Learning to be hydrolocal by understanding the amount of water you can collect from rain and grey-water and how much water you need. We will collect data about a number of systems at the Living Lab and Learning Center, analyze the data to understand what it is telling us, and use that understanding to tell our local water story.
    • Week of July 17th: Learn about plants (flora) and animals (fauna) native to the Sonoran Desert through a number of interactive projects at the Living Lab and Learning Center.
    • Week of July 24th: Create your own hydro-local project. What can you do to be more aware of water and use it more efficiently?
