Group plans to restore Sabino, other creeks

If you remember Sabino Creek when it was wetter than now, a Tucson conservation group wants your story.

“Once Upon a Creek,” a public program on Thursday, Sept. 17, will let residents share their stories of the creek and conservationists explain how they hope to make it live again. The event kicks off what looms as a prolonged effort to restore a four-mile stretch of Sabino from the Coronado National Forest boundary to its confluence with Tanque Verde Creek northeast of Tucson.

Watershed Management Group sees Sabino as a poster child for what it calls a 50-year vision to restore some of Tucson’s once-flowing streams to how they looked before groundwater pumping, drought and other factors dried them up. It hopes to start on the ground restoration work next spring.
