Continental would finally get some long-awaited greenery, courtesy of sound planning, muscle and what’s known as a rain garden, where storm water runoff is harvested and directed to plantings through channels created by land-contouring, berming, use of stone beds and mulch to retain moisture.

While flow and retention are key elements, basins factor into the design to hold humidity to support various native plant gardens.

The garden is now a budding reality, following the efforts of 30-plus volunteers who worked at the direction of Cultural Ecologist Joaquin Murrieta of the Watershed Management Group in Tucson. Watershed is a non-profit that develops and implements community-based projects to ensure sustainable, long-term community prosperity and a healthy environment.
