Join Catlow Shipek, WMG's Sr. Program Director, and Mike Shaw, HawkWatch International for a guided walk to assess recent restoration activities at and learn about the birds of prey of the Rio Vista Natural Resource Park—a living example of what’s possible when neighbors, nonprofits, and the City come together to protect and restore our local rivers. Rio Vista is protected as one of Tucson's few natural resource parks—preserving habitat, landscape, and native vegetation while offering a peaceful space for passive recreation.
Come see the transformation firsthand, including new rain basins designed to recharge groundwater, reduce erosion, support native wildlife and the native plants put in to enhance bird and pollinator habitat.

About Mike Shaw:
For over 15 years Mike has served in various roles with HawkWatch International, a non profit organization focused on raptor research, conservation and education. HWI started in 1983 in Albuquerque and is currently based in Salt Lake City. Their ongoing Arizona projects include seasonal migration counts in the skies over Grand Canyon NP and Tubac, Forest Owl research in the Chiricahuas, and the southern portion of a long term study of cavity nesting raptors that spans between the Mexico and Canadian borders. He currently serves on the HWI Board of Trustees, oversees the nesting study in and around Tucson, and has worked with raptor species as large as Golden Eagles and as small as Elf Owls. Mike lives alongside Rio Vista Park where he happily takes pre-coffee morning walks. www.hawkwatch.org
This event is organized through WMG’s River Run Network (RRN). The RRN is a program that honors the heritage of our rivers and the value that water holds for the peoples of Southern Arizona. We acknowledge the indigenous communities that have respected and stewarded our rivers for thousands of years and the Pascua Yaqui, Tohono O’odham, and Latino communities that continue to steward the rivers today. Members work together to learn about and steward our rivers through creek walks, restoration activities, river clean-ups, and educational workshops. If you are not yet a member, we will add you to the RRN when you register for this event. Membership is free and includes a regular e-newsletter with upcoming events.
