River Run Network Creek Walk: Tanque Verde Bosque Adventure

We look forward to sharing the beauty of our local creeks with you. This event will be outside and, while we try to minimize rough terrain, you will be walking across sandy, rocky, and possibly wet soils and navigating through riparian environments. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing for hiking outdoors, we will be walking in the creek, and you may get your feet wet if the creek is flowing. Also, please arrive on time as we will start our creek walk after a short introduction and we don't want you to get left behind. If you are unable to attend an event for any reason, please respond to this email to cancel your registration to allow for others on the waitlist to attend.

Tanque Verde Creek in East Tucson is a vibrant riparian oasis. With seasonal flows that often last much of the year, the creek is full of life—lush plants, diverse wildlife, and people enjoying this special desert waterway. Join Lauren Knight, River Run Network Program Manager, for a guided walk through the creek, where we may even spot flowing water along the way.

During the walk, you’ll learn about one of the key challenges facing Tanque Verde Creek—and many creeks across our region: invasive species. WMG is working to remove Arundo donax (giant reed) from sections of the creek. Arundo poses a serious threat to desert waterways by consuming three to four times more water than native plants, crowding out important habitat, and increasing the risk of flooding and wildfire. Removing it helps restore groundwater levels, improve surface flows, and support a healthier creek ecosystem.

Come experience Tanque Verde Creek firsthand, see the progress River Run Network members have already made, and learn how you can be part of this ongoing restoration effort.
