2002: Founders, Lisa Shipek, Catlow Shipek, Jared Buono, and Sowmya Somnath, meet through the University of Arizona’s Watershed Management master’s program. WMG earns 501 (c) 3 non-profit status in 2003.

2006 - 2007

2006

WMG receives first grant to develop six water-harvesting demonstration sites in Tucson and Lisa Shipek becomes Executive Director.

2007

Launch of Schoolyard Water Education. The program has taught thousands of teachers and students about water conservation.

2007

Teach 16 community water-harvesting workshops in Tucson, including the first Earth Day event with 50 volunteers.

2008 - 2009

2008: Green Living Co-Op

Start Tucson Green Living Co-op; program has 70 members & 12 workshops in the 1st year.

2008: Green Job Training

First job training program in Tucson: 10-month Water Harvesting Apprenticeship, a bilingual program in partnership with Tierra y Libertad.

2009: Green Stormwater Infrastructure

Neighborhood-scale green infrastructure model created in Tucson, transforming 10 city blocks in Rincon Heights neighborhood through 12 workshops with 200 volunteers. Project wins “Making Arizona Competitive in the 21st Century Award” from American Planning Association.

2009: Schoolyard @ Manzo

Work with Manzo Elementary in Tucson to install rain tanks and rain gardens through Schoolyard program, funded by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

2010 - 2011

Conserve to Enhance

2010: Conserve to Enhance pilot launched with 60 participants in partnership with Sonoran Institute and UA Water Resources Research Center. Participants install water-harvesting projects to conserve water. Money saved on the water bill is donated to wash and river restoration projects.

Phoenix Programs

2011: Launch Phoenix branch. Install first projects through the Green Living Co-op and Green Streets programs.

2011: WMG wins YouTube DoGooder Award with “It’s In Your Hands” video on sanitation. The video receives more than 100,000 views. WMG participates in running a School Handwashing program in India.

2012 - 2013

2012: Soil Stewards & Composting Toilets

Broaden environmental education through Soil Stewards program. Participate in EPA composting toilet study & pilot program.

2012: Partnership with Grampari in India

Create Drinking Water program in India through spring box and watershed restoration with three villages and local partner Grampari.

2013: Green Infrastructure & Design/Build

WMG offers Design Build services for commercial landscapes and create a green infrastructure demonstration site at the Tucson Association of Realtors office.

2013: Begin development of Living Lab & Learning Center in Tucson at the property we inherited from donor Marguerite Fisher. Our offices, classroom, and demonstration facilities are all at this location.

2014 - 2015

2014: Mesquite Pancakes

Host Mesquite Pancake Breakfast at Living Lab & Learning Center with 500 people in attendance.

2014: Rain Garden Care

WMG ramps up efforts to care for rain garden demonstration sites through the Monsoon Squad program with City of Tucson contract for the care of four city council office landscapes.
