Protect Our Water Future, What You Can Do About Project Blue

Despite the City of Tucson’s clear rejection of Project Blue, the developer, Beale, is continuing to move the project forward in other ways. The developers told the county supervisors that the land in question would remain county property if the city didn’t annex it. The city didn’t annex. But the developers are still trying to build on that land.

They haven’t disclosed how they will be getting water – but any water they use in the facility will be coming from our watershed. If a well is drilled on the Fairgrounds property, they will be drawing down our local groundwater supply. Even if they use air cooling instead of water cooling, air cooling requires a lot more power. And generating power requires huge amounts of water. All of which will be drawn from our Lower Colorado River Basin which is already under massive strain and which we and all Arizona depend on.

So what can we do to protect our water future? The County Supervisors will meet on Tuesday morning and discuss legal options related to Project Blue during their executive session. Call them asap, particularly Supervisors Heinz and Scott, to express your support for protecting our water future, and if you can, show up at the session in person to share your support for protecting our water future. We are also asking folks to send postcards, sharing how we value our local rivers, aquifers, and urban forests. Pick up postcards and stamps at our Welcome Center!
