Building community one basin at a time, through the Neighborhood Leaders program!
What is happening in our neighborhoods?
Share the work of building rainwater harvesting, food producing and shade creating rain gardens with your neighbors and teach others too! Join us for the next neighborhood leaders training where you will learn how to create a rain basin, plant native vegetation and steward it to establishment so that it can thrive on rainfall only. At the end of the training you will receive a free BYOB kit (one native shade tree, one native shrub, 2 native grasses, a packet of wildflower seeds and a bag of woodchip mulch).
As a participant of this program our expectation is that you will then host a workshop for your neighbors (we can assist) to continue the expansion of this knowledge and help distribute more BYOB kits.
Become a neighborhood leader today!
Neighborhood leader process is as follows:
- WMG works with you to plan, schedule, do outreach for and host a Neighborhood Leader workshop at your home
- The day of the workshop, WMG staff will arrive to your home before the workshop to help prep and set up tools/plants
- WMG staff will teach the BYOB workshop and lead the participants through building your rain basin and planting the plants
- After the workshop training we will:
- Share and do a Q&A session
- Distribute BYOB plant kits to participants
- Foster community through a casual potluck lunch
- In the following weeks, a member of WMG's staff will reach out to the workshop participants in order to start scheduling the next Neighborhood Leader workshops

Details: This workshop is for Palo Verde and adjacent neighborhood (Miramonte, Garden District, Blenman Elm, Peter Howell, Doolen-Fruitvale, Cabrini, Oak Flower) residents ONLY. If you are willing and able to use hand tools, please come prepared by wearing close-toed shoes, ideally long pants, a hat, and bringing a water bottle.
The workshop and distribution of plants will go from 9:00am to 11:00am, and then we will have a casual potluck and lunch at 11:00am. It would be ideal if you brought your own cups, silverware, and plates, as well as any snacks, beverages, or food you feel inspired to bring, though we will have all of these things provided for anyone who comes (we will only have water for drinks).
We are grateful for our funders and partners who help to make this program possible. They include Arizona State Forestry Department of Forestry and Fire Management, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and Tanks Green Stuff.
