The Monarch Project

Monarch butterfly on milkweed. Artwork by Dennis Caldwell.

Throughout the city of Tucson we are transforming yards into monarch havens, or Waystations, that provide rest stops for monarchs to refuel and reproduce as they traverse the Sonoran Desert. Transform your yard into a Monarch Waystation, and help us transform Tucson into a "City of Monarchs"!

Watershed Management Group, in partnership with the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) and a tri-national collective of scientists and conervationalists, has increased the local monarch habitat by installing urban rain gardens on public and private lands across the Sonoran Desert, allowing the butterflies to feed, breed, and continue their migration from Canada to central Mexico.

Create Your Own Waystation

You can certify your yard as a monarch habitat and contribute to monarch conservation efforts! Existing habitats that meet the criteria for a Monarch Waystation (or that can be easily modified to meet them) may also be registered/certified as official Monarch Waystations. Upon certification your site will be included in the International Monarch Waystation Registry, an online listing of Monarch Waystations, and you will be awarded a certificate bearing your name and your site's unique Monarch Waystation ID number. Here's how you get started:

1. Get all the information you need to certify your yard as a monarch habitat at www.MonarchWatch.org.

2. Then, register your site as a Monarch Waystation by submitting the Certification Application.

Check out the International Waystation Registry to find certified habitats across the nation, and join the registry!
