Help us collect data on a growing r iparian forest within our city!
\n \nHistor ically\, Tucson’s rivers\, creeks\, and arroyos we re natural cooling areas\, with riparian forests s upported by natural floodplains and shallow ground water areas. With development\, flooding\, and gro undwater pumping\, much of this riparian forest ha s been lost. As WMG plans for riparian forest rest oration and natural cooling along the Santa Cruz R iver at Danny Lopez Park\, we would like to call o n the local community to help conduct a preliminar y ecological survey around Silverbell Lake. Tall F remont cottonwoods\, Goodding’s willows\, and velv et mesquites are growing across their historic flo odplain from a time when the Santa Cruz flowed yea r-round. Using Survey 123 on your phone\, you can help us collect data before native riparian planti ngs begin this fall. Together\, we have the opport unity to document\, preserve\, and protect this ne w riparian forest while engaging with the park’s r ich ecology and natural history.
\n \nT his event is organized through WMG’s River Run Net work (RRN). The RRN is a program that honors the h eritage of our rivers and the value that water hol ds for the peoples of Southern Arizona. We acknowl edge the indigenous communities that have respecte d and stewarded our rivers for thousands of years and the Pascua Yaqui\, Tohono O’odham\, and Latino communities that continue to steward the rivers t oday. Members work together to learn about and ste ward our rivers through creek walks\, restoration activities\, river clean-ups\, and educational wor kshops. If you are not yet a member\, we will add you to the RRN when you register for this event. M embership is free and includes a regular e-newslet ter with upcoming events.
