Press Release: Watershed Management Group Offers Subsidies for Households To “Green” Their Property

TUCSON, AZ  - Going green does not have to be expensive or difficult.  A local non-profit, Watershed Management Group (WMG), offers the public a sweat-equity Co-op program with financial subsidies to install green practices at an affordable cost.  Green practices include: greywater systems, landscapes and cisterns that capture rainwater, vegetable gardens and fruit trees suitable for the desert, as well as chicken coops and compost systems.

On 1/16/2009, Watershed Management Group will conduct a project to install rainwater harvesting earthworks at 4500 N Holly Berry Way.  Watershed Management Group, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which works to integrate community development and conservation. WMG provides local residents and community groups the knowledge and skills necessary to retain rainwater on their property, returning the water to the ground.

The project will beautify the property by using plants native to Arizona, increasing its value, while greatly reducing water use. It is estimated that 50% of household water use goes for maintaining landscaping. The majority of the rainwater that falls on the property will be captured and returned to the underground aquifers.

Press Release: LOCAL NONPROFIT and CENTRAL TUCSON NEIGHBORHOOD WIN AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR GREEN PROJECTS

On October 15, the Arizona Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA AZ) will present Tucson-based nonprofit Watershed Management Group (WMG) and the Rincon Heights Neighborhood Association (RHNA) with the first annual “Making Arizona Competitive in the 21st Century” (MAC21) award. WMG and RHNA were chosen for the award based on their collaborative effort to conduct education and install “green infrastructure” practices throughout the historic neighborhood. The practices—including curb cuts, landscaped basins and gravel-filled trenches that collect stormwater from streets and properties (see photo)—improve water quality, reduce flooding, and use stormwater to passively irrigate native trees and shrubs that shade and beautify neighborhood streets.

TUCSON – This Valentine’s Day, 30 volunteers will converge on a University of Arizona parking lot to install rainwater harvesting basins, native trees and shrubs where previously only asphalt and bare earth had lain.  Led by Tucson nonprofit Watershed Management Group (WMG), the volunteers will lend their sweat to the transformation of a neighborhood.
