Co-op Workshop Grants - Spring 2010

Press Release: Watershed Management Group Offers Subsidies for Households To “Green” Their Property

TUCSON, AZ  - Going green does not have to be expensive or difficult.  A local non-profit, Watershed Management Group (WMG), offers the public a sweat-equity Co-op program with financial subsidies to install green practices at an affordable cost.  Green practices include: greywater systems, landscapes and cisterns that capture rainwater, vegetable gardens and fruit trees suitable for the desert, as well as chicken coops and compost systems.

WMG is currently accepting applications for workshop subsidies, which range in value from $270 to $550.  The deadline to apply for the latest round of subsidies is March 1st.  Interested homeowners that are not currently Co-op members may apply for a subsidy at the same time as Co-op membership.  Visit www.watershedmg.org/co-op, or call 520-396-3266, for application details.

Now in its second year, the WMG Co-op has over 250 members who have worked together to renovate 42 member landscapes.   The Co-op’s barn-raising model means projects are accomplished quickly and at low-cost through an enjoyable community-building format.

Teresa, a recent subsidy recipient, participated in WMG's Co-op to address a flooding problem that was compromising her home’s foundation.  Through the Co-op workshop, Teresa’s yard was transformed to direct rainwater away from her home’s foundation into a series of basins that will promote the growth of native plants.

Teresa explains, “There is no way that I could have afforded to do this alone at my house. I'm a single mom in school.  I applied for membership and the grant at the same time.  The sense of community I experienced was something I hadn't felt since I was a child in a rural Midwestern community.  I was so impressed with the professionalism of the workshop leaders, and the hard work and commitment of the other Co-op members.  My yard was transformed in less than four hours.”

Watershed Management Group is a Tucson-based nonprofit organization that provides programs to equip local residents and community groups with the knowledge and skills necessary to sustainably manage their natural resources.
