Small Landholder Conservation , Southeastern AZ

As the population quickly grows in Arizona, many of the rural lands are being subdivided for homeowners. Oftentimes these areas are known as ‘ranchette' communities, because the land was formerly a ranch. On these relatively small plots of land, WMG has found owners are in need of hands on training to prevent erosion, harvest and conserve rainwater, and generally manage the land. As our local watersheds continue to be subdivided, small landholder conservation practices will become increasingly necessary to maintain soil, water, and biological resources.

WMG has developed a program for small landholders that includes the theory and hands-on-application of watershed practices. WMG staff tour the property with the owners, explain educational materials, plan property improvements, and give small demonstrations for site improvements. The educational materials cover basic watershed processes as well as examples and instructions for building erosion control structures and water conservation measures. After the first site visit, WMG staff may return to the site for follow-up or further work.
