Site: Esperanza en Escalante, transitional housing for veterans, 3700 S Calle Polar
Overview: Esperanza en Escalante strives to incorporate green building and sustainable practices in their housing while reducing construction and utility costs. The water harvesting project centered around a housing unit for that accommodates up to 20 disabled veterans. Before the work began, the disabled unit was bare of vegetation. We were able to take advantage of the plentiful open space, large roof space to harvest rainwater, and common laundry room to harvest greywater. By harvesting both rainwater and greywater at this site, we are able to grow vegetation that will shade the buildings, provide fresh food for the residents, and attract wildlife to create an environment that the residents can enjoy.
Hours: Visiting hours are 10am to 6pm.

Water Harvesting and Landscape Features:
- Greywater system that harvests laundry water to feed fruit trees
- Large basins that harvest roof runoff
- Native plants to shade and beautify disabled housing unit
*Most of the work on this site was completed thanks to a high school youth group from Wellesley Congregational Church in Massachusetts. The students worked diligently for 3 days on an alternative spring break trip to shape the basins, install the rocks, and plant and mulch all the basins.
