Building Rain Gardens
with Barrio Restoration

In the heart of the Fairgrounds Neighborhood, a quiet revolution is taking place. Led by David Garcia, a passionate graduate of the Water Harvesting Design Certification Course, the "Barrio Thursdays" initiative is transforming neglected street corners and sidewalks into thriving, water-wise gardens.

What started as a solo mission has quickly grown into a community-wide effort, with neighbors, friends, and even WMG staff joining forces to clean up trash, dig water-harvesting basins, and plant native trees, shrubs, and grasses. The results are not only visually stunning but also environmentally impactful, improving water infiltration, providing shade, and cooling the city.

Making a Difference, One Garden at a Time

The power of the Barrio Restoration movement lies in its simplicity and accessibility. With a little guidance and a lot of heart, anyone can contribute to the cause. As David himself put it, "It's good for everybody."
In our latest blog post, we share the inspiring story of how one man's passion sparked a community-wide effort to create a greener, more sustainable neighborhood. You'll also find:
